Stuart Harshbarger, PhD; Lonnie Love, PhD; Doran Edwards, MD; and Kenneth M. Nelson, MD, joined the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of Orthocare Innovations, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Harshbarger is a researcher and member of the principal professional staff at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL). There, he serves as the program manager and systems integrator for the $70 million, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)-sponsored Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 (RP2009) program. His research interests focus on the development of highly integrated 'smart' prosthetic and assistive technology systems to restore function, prevent injury, and improve quality of life for soldiers, first responders, and aging civilians.
Love serves as Robotics and Energetic Systems Distinguished Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His research focuses on design, control, and application of novel mechatronic and actuation systems, with an emphasis on mesofluidic and electrohydraulic systems, fluid-driven prosthetic devices, exoskeleton systems, and miniturization of hydraulic components. He is a widely published author on topics related to robotics and actuation systems and was a 2006 winner of R&D magazine's R&D 100 award.
Edwards is a former Medicare director to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Statistical Analysis Durable Medical Equipment Regional Carrier (SADMERC). He will also serve as a consultant to Orthocare on issues of coding, coverage, and payment for new technologies. Edwards was the medical director to the SADMERC from 2003 until 2008. He was responsible for the national Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II coding function, and served as medical advisor to the CMS Alpha-Numeric Work Group for the creation of new codes for all DMEPOS.
Nelson served as a SADMERC medical director following 20 years as medical advisor to the office of Inspector General (OIG) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In addition, he served for five years as the only non-federal-employee member of Medicare's Alpha-Numeric Work Group. He will also consult with OrthoCare on issues of coding, coverage, and payment.
