Smart Pyramid™ Helps Improve Limb Health
Does an amputee have a healthy residual limb if the prosthesis feels fine in the provider’s office? Not necessarily. Walking in the real world creates dynamic socket-reaction forces against the residual limb—forces that translate the power of the body into mobility when they are optimized, but raise the risk of major health problems when they are not. Socket-reaction forces are almost impossible to see or describe, and if they are too great or unbalanced, they increase the risk of skin and joint traumas, irregular gait, and the long-term problems that follow reduced activity. Smart Pyramid™ both detects these forces and analyzes them scientifically, using sensor-based, quantified data.
The information Smart Pyramid™ provides can help reduce potentially dangerous pressures on the residual limb, keeping amputees healthier. With the Smart Pyramid™, you can objectively verify and document when the artificial limb has optimum force distribution, increasing the confidence of patient, prescriber, and payer.

Smart Pyramid™ Means Optimal Socket Forces
For over 30 years, modular endoskeletal components have served as the foundation for prosthesis stability and structural integrity. Smart Pyramid™ builds on this history and on Orthocare Innovations’ Compas™ Computerized Prosthesis Alignment System to establish a new standard in endoskeletal componentry - Embedded Precision™.
Smart Pyramid™ incorporates electronic force sensors into the structure of the prosthesis to measure, analyze, and improve dynamic socket-reaction forces. The Smart Pyramid™ uses integrated logic, memory, and data-storage capabilities to detect these forces, document them in an easy-to-understand format, and offer expert advice for optimizing these forces.
Advanced Technology, Easy to Use
The Smart Pyramid™ looks like an industry standard prosthetic pyramid, with the familiar European four-hole attachment configuration. It is easy to integrate into any endoskeletal lower-limb prosthesis, requires no batteries or servicing, and is sealed against moisture penetration.
The Smart Pyramid™ is mounted just distal to the socket, with the notch in the four-hole connection plate facing forward, indicating the line of progression. Smart Pyramid™ makes it possible to compare performance of the prosthesis over time, since reference points do not change, ensuring that every measurement is comparable to the previous measurement.
Optimizing Socket Forces
Smart Pyramid™ allows live measurements of the socket-reaction forces, or torques, that are being applied to the residual limb during ambulation.
When used in conjunction with the Compas™ System, the integral microprocessor automatically tracks the following key indicators:
With these measurements, it is easier to choose the right prosthetic components and arrange them in precisely the right way for the amputee. This saves time and money by reducing the need for replacement sockets and multiple fittings.
Smart Pyramid™ was developed with the support of the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research, National Institutes of Health, Grant Numbers R43HD047119 and R44HD047119.
